I reported and photographed, for the Albuquerque Journal, a protest where a man was shot.

For this story, I shared a first place award with my colleagues for breaking news and best breaking news-digital in the 2020 New Mexico Press Association Better Newspaper Contest.

On June 15, 2020,  around 200 people protested for the removal of the Oñate statue.

Tensions were extremely high leading to the moment a protester was shot.

The City of Albuquerque removed the statue the following day.

In place of the statue was a small memorial, known as a descanso in New Mexico.

A week later protesters marched to the spot of the shooting and came across a smashed descanso.
